Frequently Asked Questions

How do Private Lessons Work?

Private lessons are catered towards the individual student, and their goals as an artist. As my training is primarily in realism, this is usually the focus of most of my students, and I have developed a drawing and painting curriculum to teach this specifically. However, use of this curriculum is entirely optional, as the lesson plans will be developed around the skill-level and interests of the student.

Are lessons Beginner-Friendly?

Absolutely. Lessons are open to all levels: from complete novices, to experienced art students who want to bring their skills to the next level. All are welcome.

What mediums are available for lessons?

My specialties are Oil Painting, Pencil Drawing, Charcoal, and Conte. I do not use acrylics or water-soluble oils, though students who are already very comfortable with these mediums have still benefitted from lessons with me.

How long is a private lesson?

The length of the private lesson varies, but typically 1-2 hours, depending on the preference of the student.
Due to the extra set-up and clean up time required, it is highly recommended that students learning painting schedule 2 hours.

Would the instructor be willing travel to the student?

I do sometimes travel to teach in people’s homes, provided that my travel time is added on. For lengthy distances, lessons must have a 2-hour minimum.

Student Testimonials

"In the past two years, I've studied with Eliza on several occasions and with each opportunity, I grew as an artist because of her wealth of knowledge and her ability to share it in such a logical and articulate fashion. In the world of classical drawing and painting, it is vital that foundation concepts are clearly presented and understood - these are skills that Eliza possesses which allow her students to thrive under her tutelage."

Trudy M, student from Wethersfield, CT

"I've been hoping to find instruction on how to paint like the great masters for several years. I was delighted to find exactly that in Eliza Moser when I took a portrait workshop with her at the Springfield Museums. During the workshop I learned that she taught private lessons. I began the private lessons with her last winter on a weekly basis and have been delighted with the results. She is an excellent teacher and has helped me enormously to paint several oil portraits over the past several months.

Her own work is exquisite and I feel honored to be taught by someone who is so talented and experienced. Her teaching style creates an experience that is both comfortable and collaborative."

"I took classes from cast drawing and painting with Eliza Moser as well as a few of her portrait classes and have been very satisfied with the quality of her teaching.

She has an academic step by step approach that will absolutely help any of her students wanting to improve their drawing and painting skills.

her training from Florence Academy is strongly showing in her classes and I feel that I benefitted tremendously from it."

"I am fortunate to have studied drawing and painting with many talented artists and I count Eliza among them. As a teacher, she imparts her knowledge through thoughtful, logical instruction and individually guides each student with constructive feedback. As an artist, she conveys her passion by generously sharing her work, inspiration and thoughts on various art topics, further enriching the learning experience. I enjoyed the relaxed and positive atmosphere of her classes and am a better artist for having studied with her."

Deanne N, student from Wethersfield, CT

"My daughters and I have been Eliza's private students for over a year, and the instruction we have received is invaluable. Eliza is an amazing teacher, who not only has a world-class classical training and is an outstanding artist herself, but also is very generous in sharing the most important concepts and techniques with her students.

Eliza teaches art as a rigorous discipline, with keen observation at its foundation. At every step in her instruction, Eliza teaches us to discern the subtleties in each element in the work, such as composition, color and lines. With her experience in art, she can always help find the most needed area for change, and is always patient and encouraging in helping her students to come up with a good solution.

Even though I have received much instruction before, none have helped me improve the quality of my paintings nearly as much as those from Eliza Moser."
